Purple spolights at Griffis light up for Relay for Life

Sculpture spotlights in Griffiss Business and Technology Park have been changed to purple to help celebrate the coming of Rome’s 13th Annual Relay For Life. A collaborative effort between Mohawk Valley EDGE, Griffiss Local Development Corporation (GLDC), Griffiss Utilities Services Corporation (GUSC) and the American Cancer Society transformed the exterior lights of all 17 public sculptures through the end of May.

“There are several Relay teams representing companies located within Griffiss Park, including Mohawk Valley EDGE” said Mary Rizzo Bonney, VP of Communications for Mohawk Valley EDGE. “Changing the color of the Sculpture lights is a great way to support and promote the Relay. Last year, Mohawk Valley EDGE lost James Castilla a member of our staff to cancer, so this year we will Relay in his memory. We invite everyone to the Park to see the Sculptures in a different light and to join us at the event in June.”

Relay For Life is an opportunity for the community to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. Relay For Life of Rome will take place on June 4-5 at The New York State School for the Deaf.

Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria candles around the track in a touching ceremony honoring cancer survivors as well as paying tribute to those lost to the disease.
