GLDC Brings Sculpture Park to Griffiss Business and Technology Park
Griffiss Local Development Corp. (GLDC) has unanimously approved a resolution to bring several pieces of outdoor sculpture to the Park.
“The phased plan has been in development for almost a year” said Mark Reynolds, Senior Vice President, EDGE. “The GLDC Board recognizes that the Park has developed to a point where it needs to include features that enhance the business environment. Showcasing art along our walking paths and near corporate buildings will be a point of distinction from other business parks.”
First, a committee including art professionals, park tenants, landscape architects, and engineers was assembled to review the scope of the project. Now at the completion of the second phase, artists have submitted proposals and the committee have narrowed the selection to nine pieces. The next phase includes the siting of the sculptures and assembling their required bases and lighting. Following the installation, in October, there will be an unveiling celebration for the public.
GLDC has signed an agreement with Sculpture Space, a non-profit organization headquartered in Utica, which arranges for artists work to be sold or loaned. Under the $150,000 contract, GLDC will commission two pieces from artists and borrow an additional seven for a two year period upon which the pieces will be purchased or returned to the artist. GLDC will commit additional funding to the project for the siting and construction.
The City of Rome will be involved in the lighting of each sculpture. “Installing public art furthers the abundance of assets which makes Rome a wonderful place to live, work, play and raise a family” said James Brown, Mayor of Rome.
“This is the first step in a multi-year project to bring public art to the region” said Steve DiMeo, President of Mohawk Valley EDGE. “We have challenged the committee to develop a master plan for continued growth of the sculpture park.”
